Lightspeeds Laptop LCD Screen Repair Augusta GA
Laptop LCD Screen Repair Replacement Augusta GA

Laptops LCD screens are very delicate pieces of equipment. Laptops are very convenient for all of us due to there mobility. Laptops also have a very high rate of repair, especially the LCD screens on laptops or notebooks.

One simple drop, or tripping over the power cord knocking the laptop off the table can lead to problems with the LCD screen or internal hardware on laptops.

Last month 18 laptop LCD screens came to me broken for screen replacement!

Most of these have come for the following reasons: Laptop was dropped, sat on, stepped on, knocked off table or desk, cord tripped over pulling laptop onto the floor, family pet tripping over cord knocking laptop onto floor, laptop sat on floor to close to rocking chair that rolled forward crushing the laptop and LCD screen, laptop thrown, laptop put in trunk of car with other luggage on top of laptop crushing LCD screen, laptop put on roof of car forgetting it was up there as they pulled away....... flying off roof.

There are 6 components to a laptops display:
  • Video graphics chip on motherboard
  • Video cable from motherboard to LCD screen
  • Power Inverter Board (This is what powers the LCD screen)
  • Backlight CCFL Tube within the LCD screen
  • Magnetic or Micro Lid Closed or Open Switch
  • The LCD Screen

Video Graphics Hardware Chip:
On all newer laptops this video chip is embedded onto the motherboard, can only be replaced by a special process. These chips are known to loosen off the motherboard due to heat expansion, or a dropped laptop. A bad or loosened chip will produce a "No Display", dead screen.

Video Cable
This is the cable that communicates the video from the motherboard to the LCD screen. A faulty, loose, or damaged video cable will produce either a distorted display or a "No Display" at all. This video cable runs from the motherboard, up thru and behind the screen hinge plastic casing to the back of the LCD screen. Unless this cable has been "pinched" from the screen hinges, chances of this cable failing, or loosening is very slim. Once inside of the laptop this cable does not move, everything inside of the laptop is very "tight" and held in place. The video cable is connected to the back of LCD screen, and is also held in place by very strong tape, to prevent any a type of movement or loose connection.

Power Inverter Board:
This is what powers, or converts the power for the laptops LCD screen to power on. The CCFL Backlight tube in the LCD screen is a very, very small flourescent type of bulb. The Power Inverter Board in laptops is like a "ballast" to a house hold flourecent light tube fixture. If this household "ballast" fails the bulb will either intermittently power on, power on halfway, (faint image) power on and distort the display, or not power on the LCD at all.
Power Inverter Boards in laptops are known to fail.
Power Inverter Boards are all different per laptop make and model, they generally range in price from $29-$59

Backlight CCFL Tube:

This is the tube or bulb that lights the laptops LCD display. These are known to fail in laptops also. To replace this tube within the LCD panel is very, very, very difficult to replace. One mistake and you can damage the entire LCD panel electronics. And very time consuming. I don't know of any laptop repair shops that performs this replacement, I use to but do not anymore,,, I replace the entire screen. These bulbs are relatively cheap, but for the reasons above, and the time involved as to replacing the screen,,, I replace the entire screen now. I do not mess with the CCFL Bulb replacement.

Typical Symptoms of a failing LCD Screen/Backlight Tube:

  • Distorted display
  • Dark display almost non visible, but if you look real close, shine a flashlight at a certain angle, you can see a faint

image of the desktop on screen.

  • LCD Screen flicker(s)
  • Laptop turns on, and screen goes black, with a very faint image described above.

Magnetic or Micro Lid Closed or Open Switch:

This is a small switch, sometimes a "push-pin" near the lid hinge area that when the lid closes it turns your screen off. This switch can stick "closed" when your laptop screen is open, producing no display on the screen. On some models this is a magnetic switch that makes contact when the lid is closed turning off display.

Other than a broken, cracked LCD screen many of the symtoms on the various LCD components in laptops listed above are very similiar, and not easy to diagnose at times.

The Laptops LCD Screen:

The only repair on a broken, damaged, crushed, cracked LCD screen is replacement.
